Son of Pietro Baracchi, Victorian Government Astronomer, educated at Melbourne Grammar School and Melbourne University. Active opponent of conscription, jailed 1918, joined I.W.W., edited International Industrial Workers paper Industrial solidarity, and with Percy Laidler in 1920-1921, the Proletarian Review. Rawling joined the Communist Party in Newcastle in 1925 and became a full time functionary in 1932. He was involved in the formation and operation of several anti-war organisations during the 1930's. Rawling was expelled from the Party in 1939, resuming a teaching career in 1945. He was a key witness against the Party during the Victorian Royal Commission on the Communist Party.
